While he was contemplating this, his younger brother got married in June 1949. It is noted that PVG Raju teased his brother for his hurry in getting married. Shortly after that he left for America, to Columbia University in New York. Such wanderjahrs had been undertaken by his predecessors. His own father had spent considerable time in England and Europe. But that was the old world, and now America beckoned. The end of the Second World War meant that the globe was divided into hostile hemispheres. PVG Raju's brief stint at Columbia was rich and fascinating and would prove to be life-altering. Sometime during his sojourn, Dr Albert Einstein came to Columbia to lecture on his famous theories. PVG Raju had an opportunity to attend this lecture and meet him, and this would spark a lifelong interest in higher physics, an interest in the dance of the atom at the centre of being.PVG Raju, with his income, unlike the other Indian students, didn't need to take on part-time jobs.
