It was the late Maharaja Narendra Shah of Tehri Garhwal who introduced my mother Maharani Vidyavati Devi to Dr. Radhakrishnan, when he visited Waltair that year along with his family. Maharaja Narendra Shah married my mother's two sisters and he had undertaken this visit along with my cousins.%u201dThen in his late 40s, Dr. Radhakrishnan had been appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, a post which he would hold till 1936. PVG Raju explains that on a personal level %u201cthe two families were very close%u201d, and that %u201cDr. Radhakrishnan was a friend, philosopher and guide not only in an abstract sense, but in a very personal, and direct way%u201d. Recollecting Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishna's association with the family, PVG Raju's nephew Madhukar Shah (son of his elder sister Urmila) remembers a trip he made to Rashtrapati Bhavan on his motorcycle as a student when he was studying at St. Stephens College. The President of India had enquired about him from PVG Raju and expressed a desire to meet 'Urmila's son'. He was then ushered into the President's sleeping quarters, which was stacked with books on the bed. A little space was made for him to sit on the bed and then Dr. Radhakrishnan went on to enquire about him and his Maharani Vidyavati Devi with her sons33
