Kusum Gajapathi nee Madgavkar (1923 - 2018), was the first wife of PVG Raju and mother of Anand Gajapathi Raju, Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Suneetha Prasad. The couple divorced in 1963. She was elected to the Andhra Pradesh state assembly from Gajapathinagaram in 1955. She was a scholar in Pali and was a regular reviewer for the India Quarterly where she reviewed subjects as diverse as the general elections, urbanization in India and the problems of housing for the common man.Thus the US sojourn ended. By January 1950, India would become a republic, cutting away the vestigial ties to the Raj. As PVG Raju would later recall to his friend, the retired Rear Admiral KT Raju, with a smile, %u201cwhen I went to America I was a Maharaja and when I came back, I was no longer that.%u201d77
